Named as one of nine artists to watch around the world by Dazed and Confused last year, France-Lise McGurn’s evocative and sensual drawings are an exercise in line. She uses this approach to create a shorthand, perfecting her own unique glyphs, signature figures and faces that reappear throughout her work.
Born in 1983 in Glasgow, where she currently lives and works, she develops her ideas from her own archive of collected imagery and moving image files. References to family, privacy, club culture, disobedience, sexuality, and ecstasy continuously emerge.
Although her main practice is painting, her exhibitions take the form of immersive spaces where she often works directly onto walls and floors. As an extension of her practice she often works collaboratively on performances, club nights and curated events. She currently runs a regular club residency at Jim Lambies’ Poetry Club in Glasgow in collaboration with Katie Shannon called DAISIES, where they invite DJs and artists to contribute to the decor and installation.
Since graduating from the MA course at the Royal College of Art in 2012 France-Lise she has exhibited continuously at galleries across Europe and the US including Alison Jacques, London; Bosse and Baum, London; Kate Werble Gallery, New York; Crévecoeur, Paris; David Dale Gallery, Glasgow and was selected for the Collective Gallery's highly regarded Satellites programme for emerging artists in 2014.
France-Lise is currently exhibiting with Lyles & King, New York, and will be at LISTE - Art Fair, Basel with Frutta Gallery in June. She was also recently commissioned by Hospitalfield House, Arbroath to create a mural in the house and will have work included in an exhibition at CCA, Glasgow later in 2018.
